164 radiator / cooling issues

Hi -

I run a late '93 164 TS Lusso ..

...the rad efficiency has reduced a lot recently with crumbling fins , and also the cooling fan has stopped cutting in as the temp. rises ...

this means the engine runs hot when stationary.... and I need to get this fixed before the weather warms up .

Can anyone recommend an Alfa Independent , ...either in the Bedfordshire area or nearish to Heathrow / Hounslow ( where I work ) who would be able to fix this at less than the extortionate main dealer costs ..... and give me a rough idea how much replacing the rad and fixing the fan cut-in might cost ?

If I cant get it done ( reasonably ) economically I'll probably retire the car in 2 or 3 months.

Thanks for any advice

Re: 164 radiator / cooling issues

Check the connector in the cable leading to the fan from the sensor in the radiator. It is prone to corrosion as it is not a sealed coupling, and gets wet and often rusts and fails. This is the most likely reason for the fan not cutting in... Hope this helps...

Re: 164 radiator / cooling issues

I had the rad replaced on my TS a couple of years ago. Can't remember where I got the rad from, but the whole job was not too expensive and is well worth doing.
