How does the 166 compare to the 530d performance and handling-wise? I assume you mean the current (E61) 5-series?
I've never driven one, but they seem pretty quick to me!
Yes, the 530d I had was the current one, and I couldn't fault it really. It did everything it was designed to do extremely competently.....but was just a bit soul-less. Comparing to my 166 3.0L....
0-60 mph - about the same, 7ish seconds (for those who can't believe this, go drive one - the 530d has got 230bhp, tractor-like torque after all!)
60-100+ - I'd say the 166 pulls away mainly because you can hang on to the revs for longer.
Fuel consumption.....eerrrr, 166 - 20-27mpg, 530d - 36-55mpg, no contest!
As for handling, the 530d feels much more planted on the road than the 166, which feels a bit light and skittish.
Build quality - the 166 has come a long way since the 75 and 164s I owned but cannot equal the 5 series which just feels solid, solid, solid!
Looks - the 166 is sooo pretty, the new 5 series pretty ugly (but not as bad as the new 3 series which just looks all wrong!)
Cost - the 530d was a £37K car, the mint 166 I just bought was £4.5K....absolutely no contest and as many on this forum have pointed out, it must be the best value car out there!
Anyone else any thoughts?
