If you are cold in your car, or if your temp gauge moves
I just bought my 166 10 days ago and was unsure if the car was warming up ok.
On longish runs early in morning the temp gauge seemed to stay very low (70 ish) and I was cold myself, but in traffic it was going up to 90. I was unsure if my thermostat was working or not as it seemed fairly ok at 90 at least some of the time. I wondered if having used it a few times and given the fact that the car most likely had been sitting for a while, that it was now working ok.
But, I bit the bullet anyway and bought and fitted new genuine thermostat yesterday. (It was nice to see how clean the waterays in the car were)
Can't believe the difference. Heater now works within about 2 miles of starting off, and temp gauge no longer cycles up and down 70 to 90.
I discovered a way to check if the stat is ok. Take it out. Blow through the large plastic end (with your mouth). The new one was airtight and the old one let air through even when cold- i.e old one was passing water even though it looked to be closed.
