164 clutch

When I depress the clutch pedal on my '97 164 2.0 it makes a bit of a straining noise, sounding like a few clicks if you depress it slowly.

It feels quite stiff, but not excessively so - I don't think it's any more stiff than it has been in the 3 months I've owned the car. It has 81k miles.

I was just wondering whether this is a sign that the clutch cable is about to snap, because I was getting similar noises in an old car twice and each time the cable went!

Re: 164 clutch

it's a hydraulic clutch so no cable to snap....probably just the spring in the master cylinder getting a bit past its best - my twinnie is the same

Great. Do you know if that is an expensive repair and whether I should do anything about it now? Happy to live with the way it is at the moment!!

Re: 164 clutch

They all get a bit stiff and squeaky/clicky. Try to lube it but if memory serves the master cylinder is halfway through the bulkhead on the RHD version and a really nasty job to swap out. On LHD it's up in the peddle assembly and even then it's a bit fiddly so if you can live with it for now and wait for a major service at some point down the line then I would wait.
