166 handbrake issues

Is handbrake efficiency an issue with the 166?

The 2.0TS I am considering purchasing has failed several times, and even with new cable, calipers, pads and discs it still failed.

The dealer is stumped, and consultation with the alfaworkshop suggests that all has been done correctly, as far as can be ascertained on the phone. Bedding in may improve the situation, but without MOT and tax this will be difficult to prove. The old pads looked OK, and had been rubbed on production paper, but still it failed.

A second testing station was persuaded to put it on his rolling road, and he said he would pass it.

I am concerned at what will happen at the next MOT, and despite reassurances that it is OK on a 'steep' hill, as a caravanner I need to be certain.

Any experiences/comment would be welcome.

Re: 166 handbrake issues

No problem on mine (passing that is) - although the hand brake cables seize after a few years and need to be replaced.

Before I got the cable sorted, the figures were:

Brake effort 92% (<55% is a fail)
Parking 21% (<16% is a fail)

Weight 1676 Kg

Front axle 4.57 kN (Nearside) 4.44 kN (Offside)
Rear axle 3.12 kN 3.04 kN
Parking-Brake 1.79 kN 1.65 kN

The service performance percentage is the best I have ever seen, but the hand brake performance is not great. This was with new rear pads, new tyres, but a sticking handbrake cable.

I have no idea how well calibrated the equipment was...
