Re: Alfa 166 Bushes
The rear suspension of the Alfa 166 is far more complex than the Alfa 156.
The lower wishbones have a bonded rubber bush at the front leg and a rubber encased ball-joint at the rear leg. I understand that the rubber around the ball-joint disintegrates and is the main reason for failure (the actual ball-joint and the front leg bush are normally OK). The hub carrier has a ball joint at the bottom where it connects to the lower wishbone. In this case the ball joint wears out.
Replacements for the bushes/ball-joints are not available anywhere. Not Alfa, not Powerflex, not Superflex,.... nowhere.
To replace the wishbone bushes you must buy the complete wishbone, from Alfa, for £129 +VAT each. To replace the hub carrier bushes you must buy the hub carrier and new hub bearings, from Alfa, for £193 +VAT and £93 +VAT respectively.
However there may shortly be an alternative....
On my own car the rubber around the wishbone ball-joints and the hub carrier ball-joint need to be replaced.
I am a Mechanical Design Engineer and I have developed:
1. a method of repairing the rubber around the wishbone ball-joint.
2. a method of replacing the wishbone ball-joint
3. a method of replacining the hub carrier ball joint
In all cases the rubber boots for the ball-joint must be servicable.
If the techniques prove successful and if I get enough interest I hope to be able to supply repair kits or to offer a repair service in the near future.
