24 valve tensioner problem

Hi All. As you may know i bought a 164 24 valve Super Lusso 1996 in January. One of the first jobs i done was to put it into my friends garage to replace cam belt tensioner. belt and waterpump. Although he isn't an Alfa specialist he dose run a very good workshop. All parts fitted were quality items from EB Spares, England.
A few weeks after fitting, i started the car and it was very noisy and dove like a bag of bolts. I nursed the car round to hiss garage where, after inspection he found the tensioner had come loose, which he re tensioned.
Starting the car this morning, my Alfa done the same thing. The garsge has stripped down the timing side of the engine and the same thing has happened again. The tensioner has lost tension letting the belt fap around the engine.
The garage reckon the tensioner may be faulty. I / we spoke to EB Spares who have never heard of a faulty tensioner for the 24 valve model, but said they would ask around and get back in touch Friaday.

In the meantime i'm asking if anyone on the board has heard of this happening before? Has anyone any tips to stop this happening again? Is there a wrong way to tension the tensioner?

If anybody has any tips or advice, i could print them off and pass them on to the garage.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Re: 24 valve tensioner problem

It sounds as if the tensioning has not been carried out properly (it is a 'fiddley' process for the uninitiated).

There is info on the ALFADIGEST pages:

Do not have to worry about the 'weight tool' mentioned, but the general process has to be adhered to.

Whenever I did this, I used 2 drill bits (into the two hole in the eccentric pulley) and a lever (up and over these) to lever/turn the pulley.

Pay attention to the mentioned small locking hole in the adjuster's shock absorber and housing (it is very important to compress the shock and lock it in the 'compressed' position using a small drill in the mentioned hole)!!

Hope this helps.

Re: 24 valve tensioner problem

If its the same tensioner as the 166 V6 then yes they are a bit dodgy. My original sheared off the engine block after less than 52K,causing £3K of head damage. Its replacement (genuine AR part) lasted less than 8k before the plastic outer wheel collapsed.
