Just another upgrade
Its been a week now with the new suspension set up.
Now that I am not wearing the rose tinted specs, I can give an unbiased opinion.
Every driven a standard mini fast down a country road? A bumpy ride that keeps you utterly focused because the steering reacts to the bumps meaning a death like grip on the wheel and aching arms at the end!
Well the Alfa is not like that!
Yes the ride over bumpy roads is harsh and at high speed over bumps you still feel every single one!
Firm ride without the bump steer, extremely planted, so much so that I can now reach the limit of my tyres grip on dry bends. The biggest disappointment is that the front antiroll bar is not up to the job, at high speed changes of direction (70 + MPH) there is still a noticable roll that could potentially catch you out.
The only other annoying thing is that when my drivers side front shock failed (bent) it damaged the plastic arch liner (big crack in it and a little piece missing) this now catches on the shock under heavy load
Summary - If you like the ride in your 164 and enjoy the way it copes with bumps then dont change to a set up like mine! Change your bushes including anti roll bar bushes for superflex stuff, it will improve your handling but maintain that sumptious ride.
Mine handles really well compared to the standard set up but the cost has been a harsh ride (harsh enough to bang your head going over bumps!)The only thing now lacking is to stiffen up the anti roll bar and bigger wheels/wider tyres.
My next priorities are as follows:-
Squadra chip (Ive heard good reports about these)
Tyres (225 x 45? not sure exactly what size yet)
Better brakes and pads (I am also considering removal of the ABS system to improve brake performance - your thoughts greatly appreciated)
Stiffer anti roll bar (any ideas on this also appreciated)
And finally, I think it will probably take about a year to sort all of the above, which should have given me enough time to research and design the turbo system plus all necessary mods!
