Bad luck, but if the garage said there is no damage you might be okay - it is possible apparently to get away with it if you are very lucky.
Did they do a compression check?
I think in general any high revving engines need to have regular fluid checks, its not a requirement only for Alfas.
The Mazda Rx8 s at the extreme end of the oil checking scale, think you have to check almost every few days with that!
The twin sparks do seem to vary in the consumption, mine used almost nothing but if you look at the threads here you will see the typical variance.
You manual indicates the allowable range of consumption, from memory about 1L per 1000Km or so.
Anyway check underneath you car for leaks, in case there is an obvious explanation
