How long do they last...

Is 200k miles too many miles for a 164 V6.

I've heard of one going cheap, the reason its cheap is the 200k milage, can a 12 valve V6 do that sort of mileage without a problem or is it pushing things to their limits? What sort of things engine / gearbox wise go wrong at that mileage?

The cars I've got now (2 diesel Xantia, one with 160k on the clock that feels like new) is the sort where the engine lasts forever and the rest of the car drops off, is the AlfaV6 the same or does it have a very limited life, i.e. will it blow up at 201k miles or is there a good 250k in the engine?

Re: How long do they last...

i guess it all depends on how well its been looked after, but by all accounts the alfa v6 is pretty bullet proof so if it's in good nick and a bargain price take a gamble

This one is so cheap that even if the engine is knackered, I could probably make back its cost by selling it as parts on ebay! I think I will take the chance.

Re: How long do they last...

You'll be fine! Take it up to 300k miles, I dare you!!!

Mine did 250k miles and all it needed was a set of bearings in the gearbox (a grand's worth at K&L Auto's, London ). The engine has finally blown a piston ring but is still on its original head gasket and the timing gear is perfect! If I hadn't kept driving it like a looney it would still be OK I guess (bust the piston ring at 220 km/h) so just keep your top speed down and it should last a good 100k miles more!
