Pushing down on the offside rear end doesnt take much effort but pushing down on the nearside rear end is a doddle one hand can really make it bottom out. The fronts are totally different hardly any deflection when putting whole body weight on it.
This being my first 164 not sure what suspension should feel like, but rear definitely seems soft to my mind. No signs of leaks from shocks.
So which is likely to be cause shocks or springs or
Thinking shocks myself, suppose could always swap nearside and offside shocks as a comparison but really seems a lot of effort, hence im asking the experts.
Sounds as if your springs have lost there ability to spring! The shocks may also be bad but the only way to know is visually and doing the bounce test. Push down on a corner and let go. If it doesn't settle back up straight away and 'bounces' then you've probably got bad shocks. Hard to tell if there's no life left in your springs though. Whatever you end up changing on one side, you need to do to the other side. Might be time to lower and stiffen your car!
BTW, the back end should feel firm. These cars can bounce at the back end but they don't fell soft and Ford Scorpio like (known as the sofa on wheels).
