Well, after weeks of soul destroying troubleshooting of this rear foglight problem, I've finally managed to solve it!!
Yes, that's right, I know have an MOTable car with working rear fogs.
The problem? The M45 unit. Which is the little green box that sits underneath the drivers side panel, next to the fuses.
The M45 unit is in fact the computer brain that tell the rear lights when to come on and test the lines for breakages, blown bulbs or even the wrong type of bulb in the holder.
Anyway, here's how I found out that it was that unit at fault:
I phoned my local Alfa dealer to see if I could get her on their Diag machine to track the fault down. They said no problem, but asked what problem I was having over the phone. So I explained. And the guy in the service depart said, "ahh, it's probably the brain unit that controls the lights". I knew exactly what he was talking about as I had come across it the day before while trying to fix the lights.
The Alfa guy even said they've literally just fixed a car with the exact same problem !!!
So I thought I'd take a risk and buy one to see if it fixed it. But worry not! I did not line the pockets of the Alfa Dealer for £200 to £300. Instead I phoned Sherburn Motors (the chaps that CrispDust bought his Xenon lamp from) and low and behold they had one left, and it was the exact one for my 166 !! Yippee!! And all for £50 !!
It took me 5 minutes to replace and voila! Working lights again !!
Yay !! Now I can get my beast all ligit again.
I've attached pics of the unit below
