164 Gear box
After spending a bob or two on new head gaskets and a complete top end rebuild, my gearbox is about to go south now. A real pain as it would have been cheaper to have repaired this with the engine out!
The main shaft bearing appears to be the culprit as I get a whinning sound in 4th and 5th from 3000 rpm onwards. The other gears are a little noisy but not excesive. Also 5th will not remain in gear if going up hill with a full load. Oil is working it's way into the bell housing and then gets sprayed to oblivion by the clutch! Worst thing is these Super gearboxes don't have that little allen bolt the 12V V6's had to top up so I've had to make up a hose attached to a bottle to top up via the dipstick!
I believe the diff is OK but who cares. What would you guys do? Repair or replace?
