Any tips on buying a used 166?
The last car I owned was an Alfa Sud Sprint, I sold that in 1985! 20 years on I'm thinking of buying a V reg 166 2.0 TS. Having been out of the car buying market for so long I'm feeling a bit nervous.
The car I have just driven has 91000 on the clock, it has had 1 owner, a FSH and is offered with a 12 month warrenty. From the service history it looks as though the owner had totally trouble free motoring, but the bills for the 72000 and 84000 mile services started to build, with 800 pounds being spent on various wheel bearings, steering bushes and cam belts at the last service.
It felt great to drive an Alfa again, but there were a couple of concerns; brakes were a bit spongy, slight intermittment high pitched squeeling that sounded like it came from the rear and was associated with the brakes and a clutch for building the thigh muscles. The dealer confidently predicted the first two issues would be fixed, but claimed the clutch was a sports clutch and though could be eased a bit, wouldn't ever be particularly light.
I'd be really gratful to hear any expert thoughts on this and any tips on what else to look out for. I've deliberatly not given the asking price as I thought someone out there might have a idea on what would be reasonable.
All being well I will be an Alfa owner in the near future and this won't be my last post.
