Yep you have a trnasmission problem!!
If the gearbox develops a fault it van detect, it will default to 3rd gear (could be 2nd) to protect gearbox and engine. Fault? Could be naything mate. But do some simple stuff yourself firsat to check.
1. Check all connections to gearbox including fuses. Connections inside engine bay (might need to remove airfilter box) and under gearstick fascia whewre there are several little microswitchs
2. Reset ECU -see other articles elsewhere - disconnect battery, short terminals (not on battery!,) leave for 30 mins, reconnect, (make sure you have radio code.....) turn on key but dont start engine. Leave for 90 secs turn off leave for 90 secs, turn on then leave to idle 10 mins with out touching throttle. Do varied drive after 10 mins idle.
Try autobox specilaist not a stealer they don't know diddly squat.
