I wouldn't bother if it was my car. 10 years ago, it was pretty common for manufacturers to stipulate replacement at 10 years but I know that another European manufacturer that I deal with now stipulates 15 years. As they get more familiar with the reliability of these devices, they don't take such a strong "arse-covering" stance as they used to.
It's true that they have explosive charges in them and they do need handling with reasonable care, but nothing outrageous. Chances are though, if you disconnect one as a DIY proposition, it'll put up a warning light even if you then reconnect another one.
Also, if the airbags don't go off, it just means it's probably about as safe as an old pre-aribag 164 - maybe a bit better. It's worth keping a sense of proportion about all this!
