When hitting the defrost button in my 166 (and the engine is warm enough), the heat and fan are set to max, and the air is blown against the windscreen, just as I'd expect. However, after only 8-10 seconds, the fan is revved down, and after a little while more, the heat is lowered and the air directed towards my feet. This is with the aircon at Auto of course. Is this normal behaviour? I would expect it to stay on max until I hit the defrost button again, because it's very rare that the windscreen is free of mist (or ice!) after less than ten seconds...
Another issue is the heat itself. When it's really cold (like -20 degrees C), the car just doesn't get warm. I've been thinking of cleaning the engine cooling system, but a mechanic friend of mine claimed the car was too new (2001) for it to have any effect. Is it really not possible to get an improvement from cleaning the system of a seven year old car? Could it be something else that's wrong? Any ideas would be welcome!
