Re: Think I'm in trouble - loose belt or something?
Didn't get a chance to do much with it today. Took off a guard on left which has 2 screws and I can see what I assume is the auxillary belt. All seems fine there from what I could see.
Have absolutely no idea where to even start! I assume I have to come in from the side? Dropping the wheel arch liner? I see an enclosed guard beside that one and next to the engine. Am I right in assuming this is the cam belt cover?
Anyway, did the above quickly when I had about 10 mins at lunch time.
Got back a while ago and its dark and I'm trying to do this in my drive, so I couldn't attempt it now, but some observations
This noise that sounds like a belt flapping is there when I started it just now and engine is cold, but after a while it goes and she idles ok, but, when I rev it up, it comes and goes and doesn't seem to be uniform like a belt flapping. Also, it doesn't seem that it IS actually a belt sound now that I am listening under the bonnet. It sounds like its coming from the block, or maybe under the heat shield at the front.
Another thing.... Ever since I damaged my sump and had it repaired, there is still a VERY slight leak. I assume its on the seal on the plug, but because of this, I had ignored the following stupidly!!! When the car is cold and started, there is a bit of smoke for the first 20 or 30 seconds, and we're talking oil smoke here, not vapour/steam from the exhaust. I had thought that the leak on the sump was dripping on to the exhaust and that when she's fired up from cold, its the heat of the exhaust burning off this oil. This evening is my first time to start her cold and watching under the bonnet. This smoke seems to be coming from the front of the block but under the heat shield, so I can't see from where. Any idea what this would be?? Also, I looked at my oil cap just now and its very slightly mayonnaisey! Having said that, it doesn't appear to have heating problems etc, so doesn't seem like the head gasket is gone. The coolant tank was about three quarters of an inch down and I topped it up just now. There doesn't appear to be any oil mixed with the water in here either. Also, checked for oil and the level is fine too!
As its dark and I can't do anything now, I just said I'd post my findings on here and see if anybody has any opinions on this. Also, I recorded the sound with the engine running and the noise can be heard clearly. Just need to try link to it now so you guys can maybe have a better idea
