Magneti Marelli make the metal impeller water pump for 166s. I had one fitted. Alfashop, in Norwich, sell them cheaper than the original Alfa version, which has the plastic impeller. Pity it wasn't changed when the cambelt was done...

The impeller on the water pump is plastic,as it ages the plastic becomes brittle and splits.If you have the car idling in your driveway from cold it should get up to 90 degrees and stay there all day.
If you the apply the revs up to 3000/4000rpm and hold it there you will then see the gauge go up very quickly.If this is the case 90 percent of the time it will be the water pump.Make sure if changing you fit one with a metal impeller as advised. 10 percent of cases the thermostat may have broken inside causing the problem [have seen this].It is unusual as already mentioned the stat normally fail and the car would run cold......check this first as it is very easy.
