As has been said except my ABS unit was on top of the ECU both on an 89 and a 90 164. You can't go wrong though as the ABS ECU uses torx head screws and the engine ECU uses standard screws.
Also, watch yourself in there. When you locate the chip, you may find a Squadra even an Autodelta label but if there is nothing but a sticker with nothing written on it, whatever you do, DO NOT PEEL BACK THIS STICKER!!! There is nothing but a window under that sticker with access to the ROM chip. The window is there so that the chip can be wiped by UV light but a dose of daylight is enough to competely wipe it.
About the smoke, I'm not sure how much smoke or what colour, but an old V6 can be a bit smokey under full load. Normally nothing to worry about as the liners are exceptionally resistant but years of use and abuse will wear down the rings a little and generate smoke. Another reason for a smoker could be the valve guides which wear out sooner.
