I'm interested in this for very similar reasons. The supply of cheap rust-free 164s is, I think starting to dry up and when my curent velociped finally fails it's last MOT on rust, I'm going to have to look for something else. If I know that a 2 litre shell could easily accommodate the stuff from a 3 litre, it would rgeatly increase my chances of finding something.
Things I've come up with so far are that (as I think everyone knows) all the 3 litre running gear has 5 stud wheels rather than the 4-stud ones on the 2 litre. Also, I'm wondering if the wiring looms will be any different or whether it will just be the engine loom. Presumably, the rev counter (and maybe speedo) will be different? Finally, I guess insurance might be a problem if converting from a 2 to 3 litre - even though Alfa made them like that too!
