Stronger Gearbox for 166

Does anyone know if it is true that the gearbox fitted to the 147/156 GTA although externally identitcal to the other V6 gearboxes, has been strenghtened by Alfa, and if it is true, is the housing stronger, the differential stronger, the gears stronger, or all of the above?

Re: Stronger Gearbox for 166

I don't know if there is any truth in it, I would guess the 6 speed internals are pretty much the same throughout. Alfa aern't in the habit of changing things too much from car to car.

If there was to be any difference it would be on mounting lugs/points and very obviously external features.

The weakest point appears to be the diffs any way. I have just replaced my FL 166 ti 3.2's diff with a q2 upgrade, after both planets perforated the box housing, putting a 2"x3" triangular hole through the casing.

Speaking to Lloyd at clovertech, who has himself owned numerous 164 cloverleafs, he has blown at least three boxes, all damage to diffs.

4th gear synchro does seem to be a weak spot. Mine's been weak since I got it at 16k miles.

Re: Stronger Gearbox for 166

As earlyriser said, the diff is the weak link.
It was already an issue in the 3.0V6's and its the same diff in the 3.2.

The way it is going there can't be many 3.2 156/147/GT/GTV/Spider/166 that haven't had diff "issues"
