Re: 147 driver thinking about switching to a 166
The main thing about the 2.0 TS 166 is that you need to bank on having the timing belt changed at 36,000 miles, Alfa recently revised it down to this from the original 72,000 interval.
Suspension components also seem to be short-lived, the ride is better on the 16" wheels than the 17".
As far as handling goes, it is one of the best handling big cars that I have driven, I have a 3.0, the 2.0 should handle a bit better, but is really more at home on open A/B roads than on the bumpy back roads.
3.0 V6 does about 25mpg on a motorway run although you get 27mpg if you show some restraint! Horrendous around town, less than 18mpg, combined about 21-23mpg.
They have a fantastic Italian leather swathed cabin, climate control, are not particularly capacious for such a big car, but the style more than makes up for it.
I would go for a 2001MY car if you can, various worthwhile improvements. The Lusso version has extra kit, Xenons, phone preparation, memory seats, Sat Nav.
Very rare in Ireland, at about a ratio of 1/1000 for every BMW 5 series!
