Re: Diesel 164
I've driven several but never actually owned one. These VM diesels are good strong engines, not bad on torque but prone to overheating problems and gasket failure.
These engines are marine derived engines and where designed as modular units with individual gasket seals. They were not designed to sit inside a hot engine bay and in hot climates (not sure how far south you are going) they tend to suffer and blow head gaskets. However, there is a simple solution that involves a bigger capacity radiator. The 3 I've driven all had this mod done and they don't suffer one bit and just keep on going without any problems. In summer we get several weeks of 40c temps so a good prooving ground.
