On my other cars, I use a special coating - an orange goo. It comes in a bottle called "disc brake anti-squeal". The stuff I use is an Australian product so I won't bother you with the brand name (and, I'm away from home and can't remember what it is).
The point is that you paint this coating thickly onto the backs of the pads, and then allow to touch-dry (remains permanently sticky) before reassembly. I find this works very well - lasts longer than copper-grease on the backs of the pads.
So my suggestion would be to ask at Halfords etc. if they have a brake pad anti-squeal coating. Many new pads have a similar rubberised coating - and I suspect this is how Mercedes brakes are quiet (if, indeed, they are...!)
