72,000 Mile Service 3.0 24v
Helloo. Can someone advise on what's involved in a 72,000 mile service please? Cambelts were changed prior to purchase at 50,000 so wasn't sure if the 72 was supposedly when belts are due for change and I can bank on a standard oil and filter or there's more to it.
BTW - re previous thread about tyre selection, went for a set of Michelin Primacy HPs and they are fantastic. Probably not as good grip wise as the F1's I here but I do a fair amount of winter driving in Czech so opted for more conventional tread pattern.
Regards
A

We've gone on holiday by mistake

Belts only need changing around 60K on a V6, so you should be able to avoid this cost if the timing and drive belts have been done as you say. I think the spark plugs may need doing though.

You are right, the plugs should have been changed at 60k, however it that wasn’t the case replace them ASAP. Apart from oil and filter you should also replace the air filter and probably brake fluid. BTW cambelt should be changed every 60k or 5 years whichever comes first.

72k is the normal belt change mileage but depends on age - 5 years max. Mine was changed at 73k miles at under 3 years old!
Replace air filter, oil & filter, pollen filter, brake fluid and then loads of checks - Basically what should be done every 24k miles or 2 years. Pages 39 to 42 in my service book cover it all. 72k service scheduled at 6.70 hours - The biggest service as standard belt due time.

You are technically right but: "As of 13/11/2006 Alfa Romeo has finally reduced the official cambelt service interval on 1.6l, 1.8l, 2.0l Twin Spark engines and 2.0l JTS engines in all models to 36,000 miles (or 3 years). The interval on V6 and diesel engines stay at 72,000 (or 5 years), which in our opinion remains too long."(Source: Alfa Romeo Servicing)
Most AR specialist would recommend a cambelt change @ 60k/5 years.

Dougie!! shame on you!! you have been around here long enough to know! Mine went at 69K and 4 years old. I will do mine at 48K from now on. I would think 60K would be ok but once bitten twice shy!!

Re: 72,000 Mile Service 3.0 24v
I would go 60k or four years. Certainly wouldn't let it go to five seeing the state of my belts after four.

99, not me though, bought it fixed up, ie valves and tensioner done, but water pump and bearings left in, so still did the job again.

Re: 72,000 Mile Service 3.0 24v
No - Age of 166 when belt snapped?
I am only quoting the book - I would go with badgers suggestion or earlier myself. I had my previous Alfa (156 TS) changed at 46k miles and 4 years - No issues with tensioners and belts that came off. I had a 24v belt snap on a 164 years back, due to a previous scrimping owner, full stamped bok but found out was only minor services - Shame on him and servicing garage!
I am not saying stick with Alfa's schedule but find that some of the suggestions are OTT on here!

Ah the age old timing belt question.
Its like the circular saw question.Where does the blade start and where does it finish.
Niall ...Now I think everyone knows that daily you check your oil and change the timing belt.....so your weekly solution is a bit OTT.

Car a 99 snapped in 2006, I guess 7 years is pushing it. Main dealer stamped too.

Re: 72,000 Mile Service 3.0 24v
Exactly my point - It would appear that most go with mileage rather than age, it is a rubber belt that has probably sat around for a while before going onto the car. Hence the reason I would not go to 5 years never mind 7!
