166 Central Locking issue

Hi, I've just returned to the fold with a 166. However, the central locking is playing up.
When I use the button on the key to lock the doors, the car locks, then unlocks again.
I have checked all the doors are closed properly, but still the problem persists.

Any ideas

Re: 166 Central Locking issue

Try the following: Unlock all doors and open them wide. Open the boot and bonnet. Lower the windows. Shut the doors, bonnet and boot and windows, then try the central locking. Should work.

One of the lock pin motor is probably not working.
When you engage the central locking, have a quick look at the locking pins. If one of them is not going down, that's the problematic one.
Might be worth a try with some WD40, but need to take off the door trim.
In the interim, you can disable the central locking by removing the fuse and manually lock/unlock using the key.
The fuse is located on the right side of the steering column at knee level. It's a 25A fuse number 19.

Hope it helps.
Cheers

Re: 166 Central Locking issue

Mine is now really playing up - Previous problem has now changed to doors opening but then immediately locking. I have to be quick and grab a handle berfore they lock down again. The one I grab opens but the remainder lock.

Any ideas on this one?

Re: 166 Central Locking issue

Suggest you take a look at the locking pins also as you open and see if any one of them remains down.
A pin jammed in the locked position will also lock all the other doors.

Re: 166 Central Locking issue

does not always work, I had to replace both front locks last week, cost £75 each IIRC. The driver lock packed up good and proper, not even the key would lock it, so eventually had to buy the locks. And I still have the rear passenger side to do. Add to the list of 166 quirks.

Re: 166 Central Locking issue

Tried the WD40 method - This eventually got rid of Rear Passenger door light being permanently on and sorted not locking at all for a few days but different problem now. No pins stay down - all pop up and then back down.

Took fuse out now! Will try more WD40.

Re: 166 Central Locking issue

the problem will be on one of the front doors not responding. The micro switch will have stuck in the locked position on one of them so when its unlocked the switch does not move and locks it again (or unlocks it, depending on what position its broken in).

£70.35 inc VAT and p&P it cost me, job is approx 90 mins and 20 of those are getting the door speakers off. Stupid design.

Re: 166 Central Locking issue

Not sure about that Purple - My initial problem was doors not locking at all and rear passenger side door open light continuing to remain on. Loads of WD40 sorted that problem. The locking was basically Ok for a while but doors would lock again on own after car started or a window was put down or such, but this has progressed to the current issue of doors wanting to remain locked. I think it is more likely to be a bad earth but which one!

Door card and speaker removal is not that hard - I removed the rear one easily enough, but then I have had plenty of Lancias, fiats and Alfas and am well used to door panel removal!

Pulling fuse 19 seemed to be an easy temporary solution but this also shuts off front windows! Where is the CL Relay?

It has to be Italian! Fiat, Lancia & Alfa all my days.

My Alfas - 164 3.0 12v - 156 1.8 SP1 - 164 3.0 24v - 156 SW 1.8 SP3 - 166 Super - 166 3.2 Ti - Brera SV JTDM

Re: 166 Central Locking issue

Hmm does sound a bit odd.

Door cards are straight forward, just had real trouble getting the speaker covers out without breaking them, which I did in sheer frustration, seems simple enough on the CD, but in practice, well worth spending another £5 to snap off and sort later, next time I will buy them in advance.

On to business, the module seems to be on the floor under and forward of the ICS, there is a bank of four relays mounted front to back, the central locking one is the second nearest the gear stick (ie back) with a grey connector. You may be able to access it by taking off the trim panel that runs from the centre console to under the dash, the one that looks like leather but is vinyl.

HTH and good luck.

Re: 166 Central Locking issue

I had (have) problems with the passenger door lock and I used a temp fix off this forum.

The problem was the typical one, the lock didn't work so the central locking cycled to try (rapid locking and unlocking) and lock it and then left all the doors unlocked.

There are two leads to the door lock As I understand it, the larger lead sends a signal to lock the door and the smaller lead send a signal back to the alarm system and central control. Disconnect the smaller lead to isolate the problem door and then lock it manually.

Mine still locks automatically from time to time so I have to be careful to make sure it's locked when I leave the car.
