I have to change the engine in my 20V JTD sporttronic because of an cracked crankshaft. How long does it take to swap the engine? I have been quoted 32 hours and it sounds a bit much to me.
32 hours??? Bloody hell...you just about rebuild the whole car in 32 hours! I'd say 8-10 hours tops for a decent garage....unless the JTD is way more complicated some how?
What takes the time is removing all the ancilliaries and swapping them over and reconnecting everything. This kind of thing just swallows time without you realising it.
8-10 hours is optimistic. I'd say two working days..so 16 hours, but if they have other work..could easily be longer.
I'd agree with AL, it does take longer than you normally think. Obviously depends how good you are on the spanners but 10 hours sounds a good guess for a garage. It took us about 3 to 4 hours to get the engine and box out of our lads 155, but there were two of us, doing one for the first time.
Yeah, I go along with that. I would reckon a garage to quote 2 days work at least and warn of going over that. People don't realise the small jobs (ancillaries) take so long. Also, if you want it back neat and tidy with all the cables in place properly in the origional runs, plus clean up time. All adds up.
still don't see it guys - i think i was quoted about 8-10 hours to swap a twink over by an alfa indie and i can't see how that chap on ebay can do recons fitted for 1150 if it takes 32 hours!
