166 exhausts

My 3.0 exhaust as given up after 96k and I am looking to purchase a cat back system. The infomation on these is limited. I would like to fit a stainless system but the price is very high compared to other alfa systems. Does anyone have any suggestions

Re: 166 exhausts

Tyre Spot on Scotswood Road should sort you out. Only caveat is make sure you keep original cat as getting rid of the "collector" on the front of the cat where the two front pipes meet causes all sorts o problems. Also keep the middle box ahead of the back wheel in the same place - mine is just after cat and still get a small resonance at 3 1/2 on overrun. Otherwise straight through resonator boxes give acceptable V6 wuffle and a little better performance. Inc. two front pipes mine was £400! New stainless guy much better than the monkey who started my system.

Quadcamboy? Has anyone seen 3 camshafts lying around anywhere?

Evidence of my disease: '79 Alfasud 1.5ti, '80 2.0 Gulietta, '89 164 2.0ts, '90 75 2.0ts, '92 164 3.0 24v Super, '94 164 3.0 24v Super, '96 155 widebody 2.0ts Super, '97 155 widebody 2.0sp, '99 166 3.0 Super, '51 2.4 jtd 156 sp2. Looks like there aint a cure!

Re: 166 exhausts

If you just want a new exhaust not SS, I got mine from a german company, the exhaust is regular steel not stainless but of a better quality than the one fitted by Alfa originally. The look and sound of the exhaust is exactly (I think) the same as the original, cost was about 320 Euro delivered, with the full mounting kit, my local garage that fitted was impressed by the quality.

Re: 166 exhausts

Sound of powerflow didn't end as boy racer at all, in the car, windows up you can hardly tell, you need the sunroof or windows open to tell, over 2k revs and its just breathing freely really. You shouldn't get confused with a max power reader at all as long as you keep the original cat. Should be around £300 cat back.

Re: 166 exhausts

Just joined the forum - good to see some useful info. I had the same issue some weeks ago, and took a different route to fix the rotten exhaust centre section for next to no money.
When the exhaust centre section fell apart, rather than replace it, I substituted it with a piece of flexible exhaust pipe from a local motor factors. This was on the basis that if it didn't work, I could bite the bullet and get a new centre section fitted.
This was really simple after cutting the centre section out , using only 4 clamps, some flexible exhaust pipe bent to the right shape and some steel brackets to support the centre of the exhaust under the car.
The exhaust note is definitely louder at low revs, (but not "loud") and this is not really noticeable over 2000 revs. There is a lovely burble at idle. More importantly, there is a definite improvement in response and smoothness when accelerating.
Total cost was about £30, which compares very favourably with the cost a new centre section.
If anyone is interested, I can post pictures.

Before you order from Gazella I would suggest that you read the current thread about them.

Re: 166 exhausts

I have got the exhaust fitted at tyrespot, £450 cat back, quality is spot on but when the exhaust is cold it is perfect lovely smooth sound and it has really let the revs rise smoothly, the problem is once the exhast is hot after 5 mins or so it is so loud the car is unbearable. it even sets off my neighbours car alarm. I am going to take it back to tyre spot to see if it can be solved. I am having problems with my stat so I am not sure if they ran the exhaust with the eng hot. Is is even louder than before with the exhaust missing!!!

Re: 166 exhausts

I had my centre section done at Long life exhausts - s/steel almost straight through. Existing S/steel Remus back box.
Initially it was quite boomy at just above tickover and on overrun. It was worse after I did an ecu reset, but has now settled down and even the wife remarked it had got quieter (praise indeed...)

I did a temporary bodge on my 145 with four jubilee clips and a cut down tin of Baxters Chicken and Veg soup (without contents ). Top and tail the can, cut down the side, wrap round and apply the clip and some of that adhesive aluminium tape, which is great for a small hole and joints. Worked until the correct part turned up after 3 attempts.

Cost 50p for each clip and 53p for the soup.
