166 Brake Lights

Hi all.
Having a problem with both brakelights staying on, even with the ignition off. Is it a bad earth or dodgy relay?

Thanks for any help

Martin

Re: 166 Brake Lights

Is the high level brake light on as well? Switch on pedal stuck in perhaps??

Re: 166 Brake Lights

Sounds like a bad earth or such - Take bulbs out and check for any corrosion (powder residue) on contact or sign of water ingress for a start.

Re: 166 Brake Lights

Had the same problem on my earlier 166, after wrong connection on the trailer light cables. It's a fault in the "body control unit". A green box hided under the steering wheel. appears when opening the fuse cover.

Re: 166 Brake Lights

I also recently had my brake lights stay on permanently, even with the keys out of the ignition.
As previously stated in this thread, the cause of this fault is the body control unit, the circuit board covered by the green plastic casing beside the fuse board under the steering wheel. A transistor had burned out.
I replaced the whole unit with one from a 3.0L 166. 5 minute job!

Avatar changed! Recently moved to a 166 due to the addition of another mini terrorist to the family. Loving it so far!

Re: 166 Brake Lights

Same fault just noticed on my 166 - less than a week after a £300 mot...!
Anyway, does anybody have one of these "Body Control Units" from a broken 166?
If so - how much do you want for it, posted to me?
Many thanks
