hand break sign

About a day ago, the hand break sign of my 2002 166 2.5l sporstronic will not dissappear from the dashboard after releasing it. I have to push the accelerator pedal harder to move faster. In cases where the hand break sign dissappears, changing from parking to reverse or drive creates this violent shaking of the car. The yellow ABS sign also keeps appearing. What is going on please? Any help will be most appreciated. Thanks.

Re: hand break sign

Rear brakes binding?? Would explain the acceleration loss and the ABS thinking that the front wheels were moving quicker than the rears.

Re: hand break sign

I agree with jon - You will notice hot rear brakes and burning smell after a drive, the rear wheels will also get excess brake dust coverage. You should feel the rear end draging also.

Just got new hand brake cables on mine - Was binding at one side. Quick fix is to crawl under car and manually release leavers on caliper (bang back with a hammer) and then drive without using the hand brake - You dont need it in an auto anyway! You should notice an immediate difference.
