Help 164 Control Unit Location - Sensors Help

Good Morning,

I have trouble finding the Alfa Control Unit in my 1996 V6 3.0 24V Super. Most of my sensor lights don't come on in the dash however pushing the TEST button all light up.

The Brake Light Failure Light Won't come on even when I remove the bulbs. The Coolant Fluid Level has 2 Earths on the wires and the Max Temp Warning Light wont come on either even if I earth the wire to the ground.

Could it be that there is the relay not working behind the Cowl (Dash)? I'd like to check the sensors but only the Hyraulic Fluid Level & Parking Brake seem operational.

Any Ideas ?? I'd much appreciate your help.

Thanks

Re: 164 Control Unit Location - Sensors Help

Sorry, I'm a bit confused here...

You say, "Most of my sensor lights don't come on in the dash however pushing the TEST button all light up."

... but surely that's normal? The TEST circuit checks that the Alfa management circuit is working. You see the light come on. If there is no issue with, say, brake wear, then the brake wear indicators should not be lit, until brake wear reaches the point where the sensors make contact.

I know it sounds silly, but have you tried replacing a brake light with a known NON-working bulb? (although, like you, I would also tend to think a blown bulb and no bulb should both read as an open circuit...)

I'm not sure where the control unit is located, can anyone else help?

Nostalgia used to be better than this...

Re: 164 Control Unit Location - Sensors Help

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I know that the warning lights are not to come on unless a sensor makes contact or a circuit sends a ground to the light on the dash.

My problem is that I purchased the car and realised that when I replaced the cooland and cleaned up the float switch the light that tells you min level didn't turn on. So I wanted to know if the warning lamps were actually waring me or not.

I went on almost each sender (Brake Pad Wear, Water Level, Coolant Max Temp) and simulated a fault by either disconnecting the sensor, or earthing the connection (Brake pad wear example).

Unfortunately nothing worked even the brake light (I used no bulb rather than faulty so my mistake). Checked all connections, all seamed fine.

Now yesterday all of a sudden the Hydraulic warning turned on but there is hydraulic in the tank, the float switch is ok, I even disconnected the sensor (reading no contact = Max) and the light just wouldn't go off.

I'm exhausted trying to find answers, I guess I have to take it to a Specialist unless the warning lights pass throuhg the ECU ! Ironically the Parking brake light works fine !

I believe they do, unfortunately.

It looks like you need to get the engine management control unit checked out...

Hmmm Re: 164 Control Unit Location - Sensors Help

Good Morning,

Thanks for the advice however I've spoken to an Alfa Specialist and confirmed that the Sensors don't pass through the ECU, only the Engine Management Does (Injectors etc..) the sensors are just wiring leading to the Dash. He told me to check for dry joints inside the fusebox harness but I have no Idea what colour codes the wires have.

Do you have any Idea ? Or where I can start ? Do you have perchance any wiring diagrams for the 164 Super. I ordered CarDisk but its going to take a while to arrive since the postal service here is unbelievable.
