I noted it but was keeping quiet - Did not want to upset Cluffstar!

Probably wont sell for that but if he waits about a bit he will certainly make a profit!

Re: Cluffstars 166 back on ebay!!

but isn't that the whole point of e-bay. It's what it's worth on the day. I have watched many (and bought one) 166 from e-bay, paid exactly £2k for a very good condition 2000 166TS Lusso with everything & FARSH. Aircon needs fixing and it has blown the exhaust manifold (gasket?) after only a few hundred miles, so you pays your money and takes your chance! There are lots on e-bay if you watch long enough, most go for a fairly low price, so if there's one with a high BIN, reserve or classified price wait until the end and make an offer! They don't make good money, whatever anyone might tell you

Re: Cluffstars 166 back on ebay!!

You have to wonder at the sanity of some people on ebay. If you were spending nearly 4 grand on anything, surely you'd do a search for completed items first (and see that this car sold for a lot less very recently...)

Re: Cluffstars 166 back on ebay!!

He told me it was going overseas.

I guess he had a change of heart. He had a knackered 166 so probably ripped out the aircon, fixed that with a working fan motor and that was the only real problem with the car. No wonder he didn't want to sign the V5C and give me only the trade section....

Which reminds me - anyone know how long the DVLA usually take processing sections of V5s to change registered owners?

Re: Cluffstars 166 back on ebay!!

I live in Bristol and wanted to buy this car when I saw it for sale a while back on eBay, being sold by Cluffie.

I cant believe it sold for £3850 though, theyre good but not that good. Something dodgey there...

Ah don't worry about it mate, I wish I would have bought it instead though

Re: Cluffstars 166 back on ebay!!

Only paid £3500 for it when I bought it in December 2005 - so I guess that I didn't lose out massively when you take into account the work needed...

It is a shame where I live there wasn't much option for people to view - had I been nearer a large city then am sure I would've had more for it.

But not complaining - enjoying buzzing around town in the little Polo (and saving cash too!) and my wife will soon be driving too so we can share longer journies. Just trying to not miss all of the many good things about the Alfa...

Re: Cluffstars 166 back on ebay!!

I don't see what the problem is. He spotted a bargain and then moved it on. £2000 in two weeks. I would have done exactly the same.

So would I BUT I feel the cash would have been better in Cluffies pocket...Pity the buyer from the "Dealer" hadn't seen Cluffies ad.

Re: Cluffstars 166 back on ebay!!

It's funny I bought my 166 last week and my first choice was Cluff's car too but I had missed the boat. I ended up paying similar money for a car with higher miles but hey ho, there you go! When buying any type of enthusiast car my first choice is always to buy from a forum as generally you know the cars will have been cared for better by the owner. Sadly there were no other 166's around on this forum then :-(

Re: Cluffstars 166 back on ebay!!

I agree with "bk.bas" about Ebay.

I was looking out for a 166 to replace my 164 on Ebay for about 2months!

The one I bought was relisted after first being sold for £2600 (1999 2.5V6, 91K, FASH, New cambelt, clutch & F. wheel bearings and all the keys) but the buyer attempted to pay for it with some counterfeit money and the sellers wife (she worked in a bank) spotted this and stopped the sale.

Of course his loss was my gain as he had to relist it on Ebay and I was able to snap it up for £1550 2 week later. I think other potential buyers seeing it again on Ebay must have thought that there was a problem with it and did not bid the second time.

With "cluffstars" 166 it sounds like he got a mate to bid and bump it up to £3850 or perhaps his mate "won" it and he will have to relist, or he just got lucky with a sale?

As it turned out mine is a great car and the only problems have been a blowing exhaust and some rattling dust shields

Well I was about to pay you a visit, inspect the car and in case everything was OK offer you £2300 but you were busy playing golf. Have to see a car before I buy one and was praying nobody bids on it, but the new owner put a bid in 20 seconds before the auction eneded.
And yeah he is a car salesman, twenty years of experience apparently.

Regards,
Marko

Re: Cluffstars 166 back on ebay!!

As an aside, my dads VW Golf T reg 77K miles 130 TDI estate with an auto box gave up the ghost in France last month. Auto box packed up and would only move in 3rd gear limp home mode. Quoted £3000 to replace ("not worth trying to repair as it still may not work" ie they don't know whats wrong with it....)
Given normal trade in value of £5300 at VW dealers, despite knackered box. Reason ? "if it is drivable (ie limp mode) into auction warehouse, its sellable" !! Needless to say dad purchased a new car there and then (1 month earlier than planned)
Morale is - car dealers ALL dodgy, caveat emptor!!!

Re: Cluffstars 166 back on ebay!!

of course they're dodgy, like estate agents, insurance salesmen, door-door double glazing 'free quotations' etc. They are all out to make a good living at our expense, but only if we let them, and why should we complain if we can't be ar**ed to do the same My ex lost £4K on her 10 month old Mini cooper when she swapped it for a convertible because she 'couldn't be doing with all the hassle' of advertising it. As the last post says CAVEAT EMPTOR
