Alfa 164 6 speed conversion help!!
Hey everyone,
I'm in a bit of a predicament, I blew my diff out a couple of weeks ago and I'm looking to replace the gearbox.
I always like to improve things when they break so I'm considering putting in a 6 speed box. I have met someone before, a guy called Justin who had fitted one to his pre-facelift 12v 164. Apparently it was an easy fit with only the speedo being an issue.
I have the 24v face lift version but after owning a pre-face lift myself I can't see any difference in drivetrain between the two.
So my questions to you guys/gals ..
I have tried to contact this "Justin" with no luck, so if anyone happens to know who I mean and have his contact info I'd be grateful.
If no-one knows him does anyone have experience with the conversion?
Main thing I need to know at the moment is what donor car I need the gearbox from? 156 looks almost identical except for the gear linkage but I'm concerned the 2.5 box would'nt take the torque of the 3.0ltr. I have no experience with the 166 box, any clues?
Any info would be appreciated to get the ball rolling.
Regards
Dave

Re: Alfa 164 6 speed conversion help!!
3.0 166 gearbox would do the trick.. I'm sure the 2.5 V6 one would take the torque though, people have done turbo and supercharger conversions and kept the same box, also people have bored out to 3.7 and kept same box..

The 164 Q4 had a six speed box, I guess it is much the same as the 166!?

No no, I'm not guaranteeing anything will fit!
Ideally though, the 166 gearbox is built for a 3.0l engine, so should be OK with the torque, plus its a 6-speeder, and it might be cheaper to source than a V6 156.

Re: Alfa 164 6 speed conversion help!!
Dougie, was the 166 Q4 a 4-wheel-drive car? If so, could the gearbox still be used for a 2WD car?

Yes it was a 4wd. Good question, Not sure if the box would be the same?

Re: Alfa 164 6 speed conversion help!!
Hey again guys,
I've bene tryin to find a 166 gearbox to look at to confirm it will fit but I'm finding it hard to get a pic of one.
Does anyone have a 166 6 speed v6 that they don't mind taking some pics of, all around the gearbox area?
With regards to the q4, I would love to convert to 4wd, , using the box in 2wd I'm sure is possible with some tweaking but I'm guessing seen as though the car is rarer than rocking horse s*$t that the box would be too!
Thanks for all your help so far guys.

Re: Alfa 164 6 speed conversion help!!
The 164 Q4 box must be the hardest box to find, and it is a 4wd box. Of course it is possible to convert it to FWD, but why bother when it must be both easier to find and fit a 166 V6 box.
When you are fixing a six speed box. Fit a Q2 diff as well, they are bolt on to the 6-speed boxes.

No, the new diff that is mounted in the new GT and 147 cars. Alfa were kind enough to make it bolt on to ALL(except 164 Q4) 6-speed gearboxes.
Read more about it in the Tuning and Upgrades section.

Re: Alfa 164 6 speed conversion help!!
Justin's 12V Cloverleaf iirc used a GTV 6 speed box, and needed to machine the housing to fit the speedo gubbins. Copes with plenty of torque as he has Autodelta fast road cams and nitrous oxide fitted.

Hi Dex,
I take it you know Justin? do you have his contact info so I can ask him about this machining mod atall? or do you know more detail on what that mod is.
Thanks for confirming the exact box though, 166 & gtv helps widen my search and will hopefully make it easier for me to get a hold of.
Cheers all!

Re: Alfa 164 6 speed conversion help!!
Hey, this may seem a dumb question ......... Which six speed box would be best? One from a 2 litre, 2.5 V6, 3.0 V6 or even a 3.2? i'm looking to fit one of these boxes to my 24 valve 164, mainly so i can fit a L.S.D. But the choices of 'boxes / gear ratios really does confuse me! If anyone has any advice then fire away.
Cheers.
