Re: 166 Gear lever knob

Been following this thread with interest as I need to change the wooden gearknob for a more suitable one since I changed the wood (and fake wood-coloured plastic) for leather and silver a week ago.

I was thinking about one of these;
Alfa Romeo Shop - Tuning, Styling, Fanartikel und Modellautos - momo Schaltknauf F16 Y momo Schaltknauf F16 S 3163S

Charlee, what sort of knob did you fit in the end? Does the FL knob have the aluminium top, as fitted to the Ti?

Re: 166 Gear lever knob

Would I be right in assuming that 156018046 is the correct part number for the standard gearknob for a 2.0 TS?

Re: 166 Gear lever knob

Hi Guys. The removal of an original knob on a lift up reverse 6 speed is relatively easy. Use an adjustable spanner and place it underneath the actual gear knob leaving a gap around the 'lift up' part. Use a hammer/mallet to GENTLY force the knob of the metal spline. Have someone with you to catch the spring which ensures that the lift up section returns to its normal place. After a short while the knob will come off. For replacement, just the reverse but ensure to cover the new/replacement knob with several layers of cloth before you gently tap it back on. Do not let it go down too far on the spline otherwise the lift up will not work correctly.

For replacement knobs, I bought three on ebay including the Momo one and none of them give sufficient clearance to enable the lift up reverse to return to the original position. A Momo one was okish but you had to pull the reverse down manually to get it back to its original position. On the MOT, the guy said that he would fail the car if I did not replace it. I bought a new knob from the local stealers for £77.00. Should have gone to Alfa Aid in Surrey who seem to be able to supply parts at much more reasonable prices. I did buy a new centre console arm rest from them for £33.00 which is very reasonable and the gear knob and centre arm rest combined now make the interior look fabulous. Almost looks brand new. Definately worth spending the century or so that it cost. Hope this helps.

A very useful post. Thank you.

I have been looking recently at MOMO air race types but if they don't fit, then I might as well get a proper Alfa one.

Re: 166 Gear lever knob

Anyone experience with the Momo Automatico, to replace the knob on the Sporttronic? I assume removing the original knob goes more or less the same way as on the manual.
