Anyone out there wanna help a newbie

Hi all,

Just got myself a relatively tidy 1997 164 TS. It has a few issue though one being that the engine temp gauge doesn't budge off zero? Does anyone know where the thermostat can be found? Is it a big job to fix/replace and also the heater is blowing lukewarm. Could the two be related? Presuming at the moment there might be an air block in the rad. Anyone had the same issue??
Oh and while I'm at it the fuel pump is very noisy, is this common?

Cheers in advance....

Thermostat is on the left-hand side of the engine as you look at it IIRC. Sounds like you need a new one assuming your rad is okay and your water's fine. Thermostat is about 20 quid from www.shop4parts.co.uk.

Fuel pump shouldn't be noisy.

Re: Thermostat ???????

I would put money on the coolant temp sender or the gauge being at fault. The gauge should move over zero even if the stat is faulty, they usually reach around 40-50ºC even if the stat is stuck open when driving along.

Re: Thermostat ???????

Thanks guys. thought the fule pump shouldn't be so noisy, a lot of threads here saying it's common, however that doesn't make it right. The gauge maybe faulty as the fuel gauge is a little off as well, reads half full on the needle but the orange light keeps coming on. Lukewarm heater pprobably needs flushing, however bit of a coincidence that it would be that way at the same time as the gauge being out.

Had to have the fuel pump replaced on the Cloverleaf and the gauge became much more accurate. I believe that the sender is on the pump itself, so replacing one replaces the other. I assume the TSpark is the same as the V6.

Re: Thermostat ???????

had the car out for a short spin, tonight the temp gauge decided to move up to about 60 however only for a couple of minutes, then dropped down again to zero. Also the heater is definitely not as hot as it should be. My old 33's heater refused to heat leading me to flush the system ans all was good again, but then the temp gauge if anything charged up tp max due to the hot spots/ air blocks... so the fact my 164 is barely moving off zero yet the heater is not hot is nearly as confusing as this explanation ..... can anyone shed any light ??

cheers

Re: Thermostat ???????

I assume you've checked the coolant level?

If that was very low, it would give both symptoms

Re: Thermostat ???????

Hi Cheradnine,

Have and haven't !!! Not driving it much til I get it checked out (working late i.e. home in the dark and no garage) so I hope in a way you are right, then a simple flush out, check leaks and re-fill as with my old 33. I nearly had to catch the 33 unawares by checking the coolant because most of the time it would seem at a good level only for it all to dissappear out of the resevoir after a journey. However after a flush out and fill it never looked back.........
