164QV Gearbox Blown

Hello All. This is a copy from my 'introduce yourself' thread. I see that this forum is probably the more appropriate place for this...

I have had my M Reg 164 QV for last 5 years. Still only 72k miles and lovely condition all round having been very well cared for.
However, the gearbox dropped all its oil on the motorway on Christmas day!
Now at a garage away from home requiring a replacement box.
Wondering what to do with it.
I love the car but am leaving the country in a few months so was going to either sell it or store it at my dads anyway.
How much could I expect to get selling it when it's fixed?
Should I try and sell it as it is now this has happenned?

Real pain as the rest of the car is so good.

What would you do? And does anyone have a spare gearbox for this car?

Happy New Year!

Re: 164QV Gearbox Blown

Hi mate, getting a gearbox should be easy enough as there are plenty of broken 164's now - Always adverts on Ebay etc. The Cloverleaf box is same as standard V6, I am sure.

One place I founf in Auto Italia - http://www.mitchelldismantling.co.uk...ges/page_1.php

Unfortunately the cars are not worth much now but come up every so often and hang around for a while (Auto Italia, ebay etc.) - There is a nice red one in Auto Italia just now at £3000 but has been in for a few months now so probably a bit optomistic. You have got a very good low mileage on yours so you may be lucky and sell it more easily.

Repair should not be too costly if you source a second hand swap box so may be worth holding onto if you still enjoy it.

Re: 164QV Gearbox Blown

How much do you want for it unrepaired, as my old 12 valve only goes and stops, none of the toys work, so I might be interested in it?

I bought my 1990 with 110000 miles and new clutch for the £600 the clutch cost, but the paint work is taty and the aircon never worked!

Re: 164QV Gearbox Blown

Thanks for all your help.
I am trying various avenues now to get a replacement box.

Will be calling the Alfa Workshop now its business as usual again for some leads and advice as well. They have serviced the car last few years.

I will very likely sell my baby once it is repaired and MOTd.

Will let you know the outcome.

Cheers.

Re: 164QV Gearbox Blown

If you do sell your baby, when it is fixed, I may well be interested. I have always wondered what it would be like if all the buttons worked...

The only 164s around here are the parked in the front garden slowly rusting away variety. I have only seen 2 or 3 on the road. Shame.

Re: 164QV Gearbox Blown

Where about are you? My car is currently 20 miles from Stanstead in a garage awaiting a decision.

I have found a gearbox and will go ahead with the repair then sell.
Alternatively if it was convenient and you wanted to take the car as it is and do the repair yourself we could talk about that but I will need to make my decision today ideally. email misc@varnai.com

It may be better waiting until it is fixed...

Re: 164QV Gearbox Blown

make sure you put a new clutch in as getting the box out is a bit of a 'mare....took my garage 4 hours just to get the top started bolt out!

Re: 164QV Gearbox Blown

Hiya,

Aah - the wonders of Alfa driving eh? I sympathise and empathise with you, having had a 166 let go of itself at the most inconvenient place and my 75 losing 90% of its brake pressure without so much as a hint of warning.

If you intend to get your 164 back on the road under your ownership, you may wish to try Alfaspares in Liverpool - a genuine Aladdin's cave of all things Alfa. Telephone number is 0151 9442882. Speak to Trish or Keith. They unearthed a part for me which I thought I would have to wait months or pay a fortune for. They will courier the part to the place of your choice.

In your case a replacement gearbox, even including fitting, will be considerably less expensive than removal/rebuild/reinstallation.

I wish you the best - it would be sad to have to let go of a great car if a solution is feasible and economical. Any more info, please let me know.

Rgds

Re: 164QV Gearbox Blown

Hello all,

I had to go away for 3 weeks so this has been a real hassel. Anyway, long story short, my car has not been fixed. I found a 2nd hand gearbox that is now with the car but the garage reckoned x hours etc so in the end I couldn't go ahead. Circumstances etc.

So if anyone wants a 72000 mile black beauty with a blown gearbox but otherwise fantastic car let me know asap. You would have to collect it from North Essex / Cambridge borders. It has 4x good Pirellis, great engine of course, lovely tan leather inside, no marks outside.

I would much prefer to think that the car lived on than be on some heap somewhere.
