Removal of panel

How do you remove the panel in the centre bit next to the handbrake that has the window and mirror controls on a 164? When I got the car back from the garage once it had been removed and not put back properly. I snapped it back into place. However, one of the rear window buttons has 'fallen in', so I'd like to remove it and put the button back as it should be. I've tried pulling it, but while it moves, it simply won't come out. I'm a bit worried about snapping part of it if I put too much pressure on it.

Re: Removal of panel

Have you tried removing the ashtray at the back and seeing if there are any screws fixing it there? I would imagine that there must be at least one or two screws. Also look where the radio part of the console joins it, though I don't remember seeing any screws there when I took it off for maintenance.

Quite interested to know how you get on as I want to replace mine at some point - has holes in it from a phone kit and though I can't see the holes from the driver's seat, I know they are there and that is enough!

Re: Removal of panel

No screws - just held in by plastic lugs. Careful use of a wide flat-bladed screwdriver around the edges will do the trick.

Re: Removal of panel

Ah, I thought as much. I don't recall there being screws when I snapped it back in place last time.

Re: Removal of panel

You didn't say whether manual or auto, but if manual, it's easiest to remove the boot around gear lever and reach a finger in from the hole and just push it up! Plastic prongs is all that hold it in...
