Driver's Elec-Window Not closing

The car I'm looking at has a prob with the driver's electric window - It goes down fine and smooth - On return upwards, it gets to approx 1/4" from the top, the electric winder unit makes a knocking sound, then stops short.
Is this a big prob to sort out, or will it require some part replacement? The glass can be pushed up to close the gap, but I don't think that this is a good idea - will it aggravate things further?
What's the cause? + what's the solution?
Had a similar prob with a Renault and had to replace the entire unit !!

if it is the motor/regulator you will need to replace the whole unit - quite an easy job once you've got the door panel off and i got the whole mechanism for 50 squid from a breakers...although i've seen them on ebay for a tenner!

Make sure the new one isnt full of water like the old might be, this seems all too common too

With only a few 166's imported into South Africa - I will probably have to order new from Alfa - yuck! This is however on a car that I am still deciding on whether to buy or not. thanks for comments though, they all help.
