More teething troubles- handbrake cable sticking

Hi,

the handbrake cable on my 2001 166 is sticking ( I am working through the teething troubles)

It seems that as the cable is slack at the lever the moving part at the caliper should move back to its home position.

This would indicate that the cable is binding and most likely should be replaced.

Can anybody tell me how this is done? and whether I have to remove the hanbrake console inside, perhaps I can just change the ends from where the cable divides to go to each wheel?

Please advise.

thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard,

You are correct with your diagnosis.

Unfortunately, you will have to remove the console in order to fit new cables (they feed up through the floor/tunnel to connect to a bracket on the back of the h'brake lever).

Thanks,

new cablles bought. I must be getting old, the thought of lying on the ground doing this job has no appeal.

Have booked it in for tuesday morning - 60 Euro quoted to fit for both sides. Worth it I think.

Don't you have to pull out the back seats to do the cables? It is a fair job. They seem to seize on 166s after only a few years.

Pull out the back seats ...really?

Could also be that the calipers need a refurb (strip and clean!).

No- you need to take the handbrake console off to get at the cable ends.

Calipers just need to have the cable not stick ( sorry for bad english)

Hmmm, DTE agrees with you. I know it was a seats-out job on mine. Must ask why...

Nothing obviously rated to the handbrake boltheads etc when IU had the rear seats out on mine the base just pulls out anyway 1 minute job just pull upwards at the front of it make sure you clear the retaining spikes at the back though before you pull it forward

easiest to do left side the right side when pulling by the way as thats where the spring clips are less chance of bending the frame that way

Re: More teething troubles- handbrake cable sticking

I only dismantle the center console around handbrake, pulled cabels out, nip off right cabel from calipper (left one rusted and breake off earlyer), undo (break ) bolts for holding the cabels and that was it.

Hardest thing to reassemble was to get rubber collars into the holes above heat shield - took me an hour to do this ... but it was worth it.
Now i can park her on slopes, not only on level ground.

I don`t undestand why I would need to remove rear seats to do this, they are not obstructing you in any way.

PS
Price for both cebels - 50€
