164 automatic?

Good idea, or bad idea? I currently have a Twinspark and love it, but am thinking ( possibly not the best word to use... ) of a 3.0 Super 24v. Looks gorgeous, but is an auto.

Anyone with an auto that can comment? Are they still a sporty drive or do you feel like you are being short changed? Is it like other large engined cars where it is preferable to have an auto ( think Merc, BMW and Jag ), or are Alfas different in this repsect?

I don't find my Twinspark lacking in any way, but it isn't a V6.

Re: 164 automatic?

I've never driven one, but I wouldn't want to personally. It's too sporty a car to ruin with an auto box to my mind. However, it does depend what you want out of it. If you're not going to be enjoying the twisty bits and so on, an auto could well be for you.

So, O hairy one, just what are you doing with your free hand on those long lonely journeys?

Re: 164 automatic?

I use it to change tracks on my cd player. Seriously though I owned a 1991 164 V6 with a auto box for a while. Very smooth changes up and down the box but I still wanted a manual box, I dont know somehow you feel more involved after all thats what I wanted an Alfa for, but after a while I did grow to like it!!

Re: 164 automatic?

Have to defer to Mt Bear for auto experience.
I owned a 164 V6 L manual and couldn't contemplate not "involving" myself with the gearstick (please no double-e's )

I'd read that the auto gear change was good. Check out with a test drive if you can. You'll still be able to hear that wonderful sound and I don't think there will be too much in the performance deltas.

It'll be down to personal preference/driving style. See what the other AO'ers suggest.

Good Luck and keep us informed!

Re: 164 automatic?

Figures suggest around 1 second loss in 0-62mph dash and about 1 mpg loss.

I am sure it will cruise nice but would just not be the same for me!

Re: 164 automatic?

Hello everyone,

I have an automatic on my V6 here in the US and I enjoy it very much. It has a "sport" mode setting that allows the car to really take off at the lightest touch of the gas pedal. It also stays in the current gear longer so you get the advantage of the higher RPM range. As most of my commute is in stop and go traffic, I keep the car in standard automatic mode most of the time. I believe my car dreams of twisty Alpine mountain roads while suffering the indignity of flat, rush hour traffic here in Dallas.

But seriously, my car has low mileage (just now hit the 48,000 mile mark) and the automatic transmission is in good shape. My mechanic checks the fluid regularly and has said it is one of the few 164 automatics he works on that does not have "cooked" transmission fluid. I do not know if he is referring to the high levels of heat here in Texas or if owners just ignore the maintenance on the autos. My car probably gets slightly less gas mileage being an auto but not significantly so. Also, being a bad/lazy US driver, I use my free hand to hold my morning cup of coffee.

The automatic was actually more desirable for me as my daily commute would be hard on a clutch. It also worked to my advantage, as the prices of the 5 speed cars are much higher than automatics. Because of this, I was able to afford a car in much better shape and condition than if I had gone to a 5 speed.

Good luck with your decision and take care,

Jeff

Re: 164 automatic?

I am currently advertising my R-reg auto for sale in the AROC magazine for £1000. I think the auto box is terrific, and wouldn't want to go back to manual. It leads to much more relaxing driving, and leaves you to concentrate more on the road rather than the gearchange. The option of normal or sport mode (ice isn't of great value) allows you all the choice you need. The performance in sport leaves you with more power than you are likely to need.

I live between Portsmouth and Chichester - not too far from you. If you'd like to see the car this weekend, let me know.

Re: 164 automatic?

Hi all and thanks for your input. I made the bid on eBay and won it - horaah. I have only driven it twice, on the way back from Rugby and to the mechanic for the service and cam belt change ( where it is currently residing. )

It doesn't seem to be too bad - feels a bit sluggish, but that may be down to the fact that it was long overdue a service and the platinum plugs need changing. It seems to be slow off the mark, but gathers speed very quickly, compared to the Twinspark. I have tried the Sport setting twice and it is much better than normal, though I perhaps wouldn't have held 4000 revs as much as it chooses to. Sure it knows best though.

Is taking some getting used to - the steering is very much lighter and the led display is like every other one - on the blink. A pity, suppose I will just have to live with it. The aircon works though, as does everything else so far.

One annoying thing is the fact that it let water in during the heavy rain of last week. Went on holiday and came back to find misted windows. Think it might be the fact that the scuttle area is bunged up with leaves and soil, but as the aircon gubbins are taking up so much room, can barely get my hand in to try and clear it. The mechanic is going to try and clear it with an air line and hopefully that will sort it.

All that remains is to pay a nasty bill for all the work being done ( cam belts, water pump, service and a few bushes ) and then give it a proper thrash this Sunday, assuming it is ready tonight. Was too scared to cane it with no evidence of the cam belt/s (?) being changed.

But, my fleet is now one too many,so if anyone is thinking of introducing a Twinspark into their lives, let me know! She has been a very reliable car, ( took me at high speed to Vienna and back in September ) 1995 model, red ( mostly, except for the pink bits ), 94000 miles, heated electric leather seats, ( and the originals if anyone wants them ). New exhaust and year's MoT. Had a celebrity owner too.
