Maf

Hi,

I bought a MAF (air flow meter) on eBay, but it turns out that I don't need it because mine isn't broken. So, now I have one spare. It's an original Bosch (Alfa part no. 46444287), and it's tested and working fine.

Is anyone interested in one? I'm willing to let it go for €95 + shipping&handling (€7), which is approx. £76 in total.

Just let me know.

Sander

Re: Maf

You're right.

First, they sent me a failing MAF. I just sent it back and they sent me a new one, and that's working perfectly fine. No problems with the 5k rev limit with this one, and accelleration is also fine.

However, my old one worked just as well. It turns out that the problems I have (that made me/you think of the MAF in the first place) are not related to the MAF at all, although my garage hasn't quite figured out what the actual problem is.

They changed the distribution just over a month ago, and since then the car is not running very smoothly. The whole car is shaking during stationary (especially when then engine is warm), and it just doesn't feel smooth when driving at a constant 45-55 mph (~70-80 km/h).

They keep reconfirming that it isn't the timing that's off (they're actually 110% sure......... yeah, right...), but they can't seem to find the real problem. I'm pretty sure that it's caused by the distribution work they've done, so it's really their problem. Had the spark plugs renewed as well (they said that might also be the cause), and that also didn't fix it.

To go short: the MAF is perfectly fine.

Regards,
Sander

Re: Maf

Just got a call from the garage. They checked the timing again and said that it's 200% (yes, they're even MORE sure now) not related to the timing.

However, they did find out that one of the cylinders isn't working properly. Two chances, they reckon:
1) mechanical problem (like a spring or something)
2) a dirty fuel injector

They'll try to clean the fuel system by putting some additive in the fuel tank and see what happens. If it doesn't fix the problem, we'll have to go and see what the mechanical problem is. Too bad it's one of the not-so-easy-to-get-to cylinders in the back... Murphy, I guess...

Next month is MOT time, and I'm afraid I'm in for a financial disaster...

Re: Maf

Dont worry about it, where all in the same boat! as said before i actually reserve some money from my pay packet for my alfa! I, thinking take it to a specialist, its proably worth your while, may cost a little more but cheaper in the long run. I did have a good one but lost his number, ill try and get it back........somehow

Re: Maf

Some guy at another Alfa garage told me that it is possible that the procedure for changing the timing belt _can_ lead to valve damage when it's not properly done. So, the garage who did the work on the distribution claiming that the timing is fine, might be right. However, if they made a slight mistake during the procedure, it's not entirely impossible that they damaged one of the valves in one of the cylinders...

Still, there's hardly any way for me to actually proof that the engine was running fine before, and that the engine trouble is caused by a mistake they made...

Sander

PS To think that I sold my MGF because it was becoming too expensive in maintenance and bought an Alfa Romeo.... What was I thinking?????
