Could do with some advice.....

Hey peeps,

i have a technical question for all you awesome Alfa people.

My aircon/heater has stopped working in so much as the fan does not come on. I have got a copy of the workshop manual on cd to have a look at what fuses there were and if it would be worth changing one of them?, i found an internal fan fuse, so my question is how do you know if a fuse has blown? , can you tell by just looking at it or is there some kind of test you can do?

I am very new to this car (alfa 166 2.5 v6) and want to keep the engine and everything else tip top so i am learning where everything is etc. When the fan stopped it was in aircon mode, the fan stopped and some smoke came out of the interior blowers. When i turn it on you can hear a click in the engine compartment and again when it's switched off. It may be that it needs re-gassing etc, has anyone got any advice before i spent mega-bucks getting it fixed when it might be something simple that i can do myself. Also when i had the bonnet up polishing the chrome parts (as you do) i noticed that when the ignition is turned on (without starting the engine) there is a buzzing noise coming from something on the right of the engine, just want to know if this is normal????

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Alfa 166 V6 2.5L

Re: Could do with some advice.....

Sounds to me that your fan motor has fried. I bought my 2.5L 166 with a fried motor and it cost me around 500 pounds to change it (including a new motor). It was done by a Alfa them selves here, so you might get it abit cheaper. There is a thread here though with someone that changed it himself, and he describes it pretty well what to watch out for and how to do it. Try the search

Hope this helps

Re: Could do with some advice.....

great reply - thankyou - i will search for the thread explaining how to change it, i was expecting it to be something expensive

Thanks again

**Update**

Upon reading other threads i think that it is the fan motor thats gone and agree with the above poster as all the tempreture controls work and there is a click sound when activated. Will try and do this myself as the lobour costs are hidious and i would like to learn.

Re: Could do with some advice.....

i have been informed to change the internal fan fuse first. Does anyone know where this fuse is located? i have pulled down the flap under the steering column and found a whole host of fuses in there with all kinds of text on them like service1 service2 etc but don't know which one it is.

also is it ok to change a fuse with the battery connected??
