Central locking problem
Got to car after work, no probs, drove home & parked in drive.
Pressed remote to lock car.........locks go down, 1 sec later pop back up.
After checking each lock & internal button, it seems that I can use the passenger door key manually which then centrally locks all doors, but the drivers door key results in popping back up - the px lock is not going down.
The dash button has the same effect.
So - I think the electric part of the lock on the px side has failed, so the lock only moves when mechanically turned by the key (or by the handle from the inside). When the lock is still up, the rest of the locks pop up again (the complete reverse happens when you start from a locked situation).
Questions:
1. Have I diagnosed it correctly?
2. what parts will I need?
3. Should I get the garage (£30 ph) to fit the part properly & leave me to replace the door trim & bits (I have 2 left hands )
Thanks

don't mention Z4

Re: Central locking problem
that is so weird - i had exactly the same problem a couple of weeks ago and it was with the passenger side door lock...could only lock the car using the outside passenger lock as well.
Ended up disconnecting the motor inside the door - got a new one to fit but haven't got round to it yet....it's on the list
I think it's actually a dead easy job - the hardest bit is getting the door panel off to be honest....
Incedently, what dash button are you speaking about??

Re: Central locking problem
Hi Niall - the dash central locking button is next to the ASR STR & fuel flap buttons - I think the early cars had less buttons tho'.
How much did you get the lock for? My 2003 ePer says £44ish.
The door speaker was from S****horpe , and the waterproof membrane was tricky. I have left them off for now, to save messing with all the screws again!!

Re: Central locking problem
yeah, the speaker - or more accurately the surround - was a real mare on both door cards i've taken off. Got the lock from somebody on ebay that had a couple of doors for 20 squid....came complete with a new interior handle as well if anybody needs?!
My car doesn't have that button....feel all inadequate in the button department now

Re: Central locking problem
Before anything, try giving the door mech a good blast of wd40 pulling the rubber gaiter back with a small screw driver and including into the keyhole..........it worked for me

Already tried the WD40, will try again from the inside.
I have been offered a lock for £35 from a dismantler yard, waiting for a 2nd one to return email (hopefully cheaper).
Took fuse out of circuit to save messing around walking round the car whenever I park up

Re: Central locking problem
I had the exactly the same problem twice, and on both occasions it happened because I used the remote to close the doors, whilst my son still had his door open, and closed it afterwards. On both occasions I solved the problem by opening the doors, putting the key in the ignition, leaving it there for a few seconds, and then switching on the engine. After switiching off, and making sure my son didn't have his door open I closed the doors with the remote and all was well. I imagine that as when you use the remote you also switch on the alarm, it must be some sort of bug in the software.
PS: On the first time it took me a good ten minutes to get it sorted, but the second one took about 30 sec

The system detects when a lock hasn't worked, releasing the others. If this happens (5ish) times over a few seconds, the system shuts off the electric locking. After approx. 2 mins it resets.
I have my local garage fitting a new lock tomorrow - they think it must be the problem, as everything else checks out OK & apparently it is a known weak spot

Re: Central locking problem
Even more weird - it's just happened to me too, but on the driver's side. Is there some sort of virus going around attacking 166 door locks?!
It's great to have the forum to help out when these problems arise. Thanks, guys.

Re: Central locking problem
All fixed now, and I have replaced the door panel to complete the repair.
'twas the lock that was the problem, £45 plus fitting, which was worth the ££s paid to the garage, judging from Niall's post earlier.
So it does seem a common problem.
Also , when I dismantled the door, I found out why the speaker grill was so hard to remove - one metal clip had somehow reverse hooked into the speaker frame. If 2 clips had done this, I think the only way to take the grill off would have been with a knife.
It appears that the best thing to use to take the speaker grill off would be a kitchen pallet knife - 3/4" wide, probably needing 4 of them to push back the four clips at once & then slide the grill from the door.
At least now I know what to do if I ever bother to replace the 'chrome' door handles.

Re: Central locking problem
Howard,
Can you tell me which part had to be replaced? Presumably it wasn't the actual door lock?
I have booked my car into the local stealer but they want an hour to decide what the problem is!! It would short-cut matters considerably if I could tell them what I want done and make sure the right part is available.
Many thanks,
Alfabaz

Re: Central locking problem
i'm afraid it will be the door lock as the motor is built into it....

As Niall said - the lock is integrated with the electrical actuator.
Exactly what symptoms do you have?
If all doors are closed, can you physically lock the car by the key
And, does this then result in all the doors locking, or just the one being key-operated
etc.

Re: Central locking problem
I can physically lock the doors with the key. This only works on the driver's side - using the key on the passenger door results in all of the buttons popping up again (ie just as if I had used the plipper).
Same thing happens using the interior central locking button.
I therefore assume that the actuator on the drivers side has failed, since the lock on that side needs to be activated manually with the key.
If I have to change the whole lock, does that mean a different key will be needed to operate that door from now on? That would be a pain!
