Yup all the 164s had the 8v Engine. You need a 16v one from a 155, GTV, Spider, 145/146, 147 or 156. I'd go for a later 156 or 147 one TBH as they're of the same age as your car.

Re: Alfa 164/166 engine

Going back to your original question; it should fit as the mounting points are the same on the 166 and 164. You'll have to change a lot more than the engine though as has been mentioned they are not the same power plants.

With a huge budget it would be possible but would it be worth it - probably not

You will have more luck with a 2.0 16v engine from a 145/146/155/156/Spider/GTV

a 2.0 8V from a 164 would be a lot of work

Re: Alfa 164/166 engine

The reason why i ask, ebay had a 166 2.0 buy it now for £500, it needed a new engine. I have an old 164 as my 166 replaced it. I thought if i could swap the engines over it would be a bargain!

The older engines are actually better, they go better and last longer, all in all it would have been a engine swap! Didnt bother in the end to get it!

But good to know that the mounts are in the same place! Thanks all for the help!

Re: Alfa 164/166 engine

could you maybe have used the bottom end and used the top end and electronics/injection system from the broken engine?

Re: Alfa 164/166 engine

lol.......what! Sound complex to me, im only 21 and no nothing about engines! I was hoping for a stright swap, with as little modifications as poss! It was only to sell the car as working! I think i see where your comming from though! Too much work for me!

Re: Alfa 164/166 engine

yeah, it would be a lot of work....although if the engines are out the car a strip and rebuilt would be much easier than in the car! Best to source a late model 16v twinnie and go for the straight swap
