Oil be dammed

Right, I have read the detailed thread in the main lounge, but want to see what other 8v Tspark owners have tried.

Since performing an oil change on my 164 a year ago, I have had to top up with 2 litres of Selenia 10w40 in 6000 miles. I don't know if this is average or not - she has now covered 91000 miles. Anyway, I am thinking of trying a 10w50, or maybe 60 in the hope that it will burn less. Anyone tried something that has been an improvement on the recommended Selenia, or will any changes be negligable? Am I likely to put a strain on the oil pump if it is too thick?

What about Mobil 1 for instance? I get a bit paranoid about checking the oil level and would be happier if she eased back on her consumption just a bit.

Cheers

Re: Oil be dammed

No leaks whatsoever. I think the oil disappears when I drive con brio, from time to time. As you do.

But if this is what everyone else is getting, then I suppose I will stick with the Selenia.

I've got whatever 10w40 semi synth the garage puts in and top it up with Shell Helix. It probably uses half a litre every thousand miles or so, sounds roughly similar to yours.

Re: Oil be dammed

It doesnt sound like an insane amount of oil but a little bit heavy. I would worry about using expensive oils in a car of that age, just use a regular semi synth no brand....no benefits from other stuff apart from more money wasted, change the oil filter often and it will probably outlast you

Do you notice any smoke from exhaust at any times? When I had my 8v T Spark I used it as a daily driver for 2 years on a 50 mile commute and used to race the ****** out of it, I used approx 1 litre every 3k miles, but everyones car is different.

Must be average consumption then. Thanks.

It does seem to be lasting very well. *touch wood* No smoke ever, either. But then my idea of con brio would probably make an Italian laugh! Only rarely change up at 5k.

Thanks for all your input. I will stick with the usual oil. Hoping for no rain on Saturday. Normally horrible weather when I am grovelling under the car.

I generally never change up before 4 and more usually at the red line. 132k and still going strong! *touch wood*

Having said that, I do have some oil leaking out of the front of the engine, but it's fairly minimal.

Re: Oil be dammed

Perhaps I am missing out on a side of the car that I have never experienced? It just feels like I am being a bad parent and abusing her if I change up past 4500! But maybe she likes it.... I'll do it for a while and see if anything breaks.

Re: Oil be dammed

Just drive the car with revs, but not foot to the floor and banging it through the gears type of stuff, and it will definitely appreciate it and will not complain .

Re: Oil be dammed

An very good engineer (and sometime alfa owner & mechanic) once told me alfa engines are designed for and must be driven at high rev ranges, the ones that develop problems are not driven in this fashion. ..basically give it loads she loves it!

ps. i hope what he told me is true - i belive it anyway. Can any other Alfistis confirm it?

No one has ever told me this but I believe just because I want to, If I wasnt going to drive fast(where the roads allow etc etc ) I would buy a ford fiesta then only take it out when I wanted to clog the roads up for absolutely no good reason.
