Clutch Slave Cylinder replacement - 164 TS

Bugger.

Jumped in the car the other day and there's no clutch - looks like the slave cylinder has blown its seals.

I've managed to track down a new replacement (obsolete already ), but need a bit of advice on how to swap it out - has anyone got any experience? Apparently they are the same for the TS and the 3.0.

It looks fairly easy as it sits on top of the gearbox but this is an Alfa we're talking about so i'm expecting the worse!

Any advice that is of any use gets you a personal thankyou written on the car in marker pen (when it's in livery!) and a mention on the TPB website when I can be bothered to update it - so a chance of European fame too

Yours in anticipation of grazed knuckles,

Rob

Re: Clutch Slave Cylinder replacement - 164 TS

Hi Rob, I replaced mine about a month agao. Pretty easy job, found it was much easier to undo the whole bracket - 3 x 14mm bolts - than try to remove circlip etc in situ. Bleeding was a bit tricky, use a rag to stop fluid form going everywhere and open bleed nipple, push acutating road all the way back and then cloise nipple. After a couple of days use repeat to expel any remaining air. Hope that helps, Mike

Yep, p_ss easy so long as you follow Mike's advice and don't try to take the circlip out. A good way to bleed is to raise the slave above the level of the fluid bottle. Attach some hose from the nipple to a bottle to collect bled fluid and don't let the bottle run dry. Use latex gloves too!! Nasty stuff brake fluid and this is messier than doing brakes. Remember you'll have to pull back the peddle to draw fresh fluid from the bottle and the slower you to do this the better.

Nope! Master behind pedal. That's the main one that starts the ball rolling. The 'slave' at the clutch only comes into action after the 'master' has been pressed. Kind of makes sense dunnit!?

Re: Clutch Slave Cylinder replacement - 164 TS

Replaced the slave on a 164 ts a few years ago. Cant remember any great problems in doing it. Just make sure you get everything out of the way (air hoses, wires etc) and it makes life much easier as you have a much better view. The only fiddly bit i can remember is putting the circlip back on but after a few ffffss and blinds it was cool.
I also replaced the clutch master cylinder. Now thats another story. I think mr alfa must have bolted it on and then deceided to put everything else around it just to make life interesting. But thats why we love alfas. they challenge us

Did ,ine about a month ago -- really easy, once you get the air intake box out of the way. And it's best to compress the cylinder first, it will draw a shot of fluid in to start things off right away.

Mine was ordered from Fiat by my local garage, about £25...

Re: Clutch Slave Cylinder replacement - 164 TS

The slave cylinder on mine failed last year. Due time constraints it went to the local Fiat / A-R dealer. Amazingly, not only did they source the part very quickly (about a day, unlike the usual 3 weeks) but the total cost was about 110 quid. A bit worrying that these bits are now obsolete though.
