Help 164 twin spark running rough

Help!!
my 164 twinspark has suddenly lost all power and when driving cannot get above 3K revs, there is a lot of induction roar but not alot of anything else in fact it feels like its got less than 4 cylinders. Took the plugs out and they are all fine, despite this I even changed them - no difference.
Pretty certain its not mechanical (ticks over loverly , as normal)

Any ideas?

Re: 164 twin spark running rough

This only works with post 93 facelift ts's

Check whether both coils are working.

Disconnect one coil (pull the leads off) and then disconnect the sparrk compressor (under the coil) by pulling the plug off. If the other coil/spark compressor is healthy the engine should run

If it runs OK then reconnect and try the same proceedure on the other coil.

To check whether it is the spark compressor that is faulty simply swap the coils over ( the coils are interchangable).

You could also check whether the airflow meter (between the air filter and the plenum) has a sound electrical connection.

Hope this helps

Re: 164 twin spark running rough

swopped the coils about, disconnected one at atime etc - no difference, unplugged the maf didnt seem to make much difference either?

Am now thinking maybe the maf unit - anybody any ideas on how to check the function?

Re: 164 twin spark running rough

took the top of the maf and it seems to be working - plenty of resistance when accelerator open and does run better with it plugged in.

Now im confused, it revs up to rev limiter under no load without problem, but when I take it for a drive fine upto about 3.5K revs then nothing.

pretty sure ive eliminated the coils, plugs and maf - whats left?

Re: 164 twin spark running rough

Have you carefully checked the rubber boot between the AFM and the throttle for leakage? You may need to take it off and stretch it to check.

Re: 164 twin spark running rough

hi
i am not too up on twinsparks but sounds like it could be a knackered cat, take it to your local friendly mot centre and ask them to put her on the gas tester......should let you know immediately if the cats knacked...........that is if your model has a cat lol
