Help Alfa 166 3.0 black smoke...

Hi!
When i start engine at the morning and press accelerator pedal up and down from exhaust is coming black smoke. After 1-2 minutes it's gone and engine is working ok. Do you have the same situation with your Alfa 166 3.0 engine?

I have changed:
1. New Bosch MAF + filter
2. Engine coolant temperature sensor
3. Lambda is tested and working OK

Re: Alfa 166 3.0 black smoke...

Sounds like overfuelling or such like. Maybe try some injector cleaner and drive really hard (e.g. low gear on motorway) to heat everything up and blow off the carbon. Don't do this if your timing belt is due! Are there any fault codes?

Is it using oil? Is the air filter fairly clean? Are there any cracks in the air supply hose (I met this)? I'd get a dealer/specialist to check for fault codes and perhaps check the fuel supply pressure.

Maybe replace the thermostat (distinct from temp sender). I guess check for gunk in the throttle body. Could be a misfire - check the condition/replace the spark plugs?

P.S. Could also be injectors (more of a problem with diesels though)

1-2 mins of black smoke sounds serious. You could kill your catalytic convertor.
