Is it a metalic grating/rubbing sound? If so it might be the brake dust cover catching the disk ever so slightly, or the small triangular plate that is rivited to the back of the upright, they rust loose, and when turning cause them to lean onto the disc. Wheel bearing tend to make a whine when they start to wear out.

I don't know if Alfas do this but if you have driven where there are chippings some cars get small stones stuck between the disc and backplate or caliper.

not really a metallic noise, hard to explain but does sound like something could be rubbing. i've had bearing noises before on previous cars and the noise didnt get louder when braking. having it checked tomorrow so will ask the mechanic to check the backing plate etc

in addition to Marks good advice, there is also the possibility the unworn rough face of the disc (on the inside) is catching on the pad somewhere. It can be cured by lightly grinding away this surface so it is roughly level.
